ABSTRACT
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a unique epithelial malignancy that occurs at a high frequency in certain regions of Southeast Asia. Previous study revealed the association between Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) and to a lesser extent, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) with NPC. The role of the EBV in the pathogenesis of NPC was further supported by the recovery response of the tumor cells after being treated with EBV-specific T lymphocytes. The present study aims to determine the frequency distribution of EBV infection among the pathologically confirmed NPC patients and healthy control in Surabaya, Indonesia. The presence of Human Papilloma Virus infection (HPV) was also analysed.

ABSTRACT
There is an urgent need to find reliable and relevant diagnostic tools for patients with autoimmune urticaria especially in a developing country such as Indonesia. The basophil histamine release assay (HRA) is currently the “gold standard” for detecting functional autoantibodies in serum of patients with chronic urticaria. However, this bioassay is difficult to standardize because it requires fresh basophils from healthy donors, is not widely commercially available, and is time consuming. The detection of patients with autoantibodies using in vivo autologous serum skin test (ASST) also poses challenges. Firstly, the ASST is at best around 80% sensitive and specific using in vitro HRA as the “gold standard”, and secondly, there is some divergence results obtained by different methods used to detect patients with autoantibodies, due to inconsistency in methods, results and interpretation of the ASST in the literatures. The purpose of this study was to find and develop a new method of ASST. This new method should be practical and with higher reliability (sensitivity and specificity) as a diagnostic tool for autoimmune urticaria. The method used in this study was to perform a preliminary study followed by advanced study through cross sectional designs. The results of this study showed that the new ASST, has a higher reliability than the former ASST methods reported in literatures. In addition, we also found that disease severity with cut-off value of < 12, could be used as an adjunct to detect patients with positive functional autoantibodies. Finally, we also report with pride that we have now the ability to perform HRA which was never done before.

ABSTRACT
Hexane fraction of unripe papaya seed extract contains glycosides, alkaloid and triterpenoids, which is assumed to have an anti fertility effect, so it can be used as a male contraception, although the mechanism of action is not yet clear. Research is conducted at Animal Laboratory Unit, Department of Pharmacology Faculty of Medicine University of Udayana, and Laboratorium Patologi Balai Penyidikan dan Pengujian Veterian (BPPV) Wilayah VI Denpasar Direktorat Jenderal Peternakan, Departemen Pertanian. This study used the pre-test and post-test control group design, using 30 male mice of balb C strain, aged 12 weeks, weight 20-22 gram, subsequently grouped by random into 3 groups each consisting of 10 male mice. One control group (P0 = control group) was given double distilled water, and two treatment groups (P1 = treatment group) was given fraction of the hexane extract of young Carica papaya seed 20 mg/20gram/day, (P2 = treatment group) was given fraction of the methanol extract of young Carica papaya seed 20 mg/20 gram/day. After 36 days of treatment, evaluation of the testis, of the male mice was conducted. Data were analysed by normality test of Kolmogorov Smirnov Goodness of Fit, homogeneity test, and Anova test. This study showed that spermatic cells decreased significantly (p < 0,01). It was concluded that hexane fraction and methanol fraction of unripe carica papaya seeds extract could decrease spermatic cells of male mice (mus musculus).

ABSTRACT
A small scale trial of Bifenthrin dosage 0,5 ml /m3 against DHF vector Ae. aegypti was conducted in the morning using Aerosystem in residential of Grobogan municipality in 2000. The air Bioassay test for insecticides tested showed that spraying at a distance of 0-5 meters caused 100% mortality of Ae. aegypti, after 24 hours of the treatment in the laboratory.

ABSTRACT
The present study was designed to compare the effects of ethanolic extract of ginger (Zingiber officinale) and its phenolic component [6]-Gingerol on viability, antiproliferation and apoptotic levels of human hepatoma cell lines (HepG2) and its antioxidant activity. HepG2 cells were cultured in Eagle’s minimum essential medium (EMEM) and the percentage of cell cytotoxicity was evaluated by tetrazolium salt (MTS) assay. Antiproliferation and apoptotic levels were measured by 5’Bromo-2’deoxyuridine (BrdU) colorimetry. Antioxidant capacity was studied by 1.1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl radical (DPPH) using spectrophotometry. We found that cytotoxicity and antiproliferative effect of ginger extract and [6]-Gingerol could be associated with induction of apoptosis. The ginger ethanol extract and [6]-Gingerol also showed remarkable antioxidant activities in comparison with ascorbic acid and N-acetyl-L-cysteine.

ABSTRACT
The mechanisms by which probiotic bacteria affect the immune system are unknown yet, but many of them are attributed to an increase in the innate or in the acquired immune response. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the probiotic on the histology structure of intestinal layer in a mice model of allergy. Male Balb/C mice were sensitized and challenged intra peritoneally (i.p) with ovalbumin (OVA). Mice were immunized i.p. on days 0 and 7 with 2.5 mg of OVA adsorbed to 7.75 ml of Aluminum hydroxide gel. OVA challenges (10 mg in l0 ml of PBS) were administered orally on days 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13, with mice being sacrificed on day 14. This probiotic was orally administered to Balb/C mice. Intestinal microscopic slides were prepared using parafin method and stained with hematoxylin eosin staining. The data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis, followed by Mann-Whitney Test. The results showed that probiotic can minimized inflammation of intestinal layer in the experimental animal, not significantly different with 3rd generation of antihistamine.

ABSTRACT
Antibiotics have been widely used in the treatment of infectious diseases. However, their effectiveness has been questioned due to the tendency of some bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa among others has been known to be resistant to several antibiotics due to its MexAB-OprM efflux pump. Perhaps, the nucleotide sequence of its mexB gene fragment has changed followed by changes in amino acid sequence leading to alteration of the substrate recognition site. This alteration causes disability of antibiotics to recognize it and they are pumped out from the bacterial cell causing decrease in its inhibition concentration. An observasional study was performed using four P. aeruginosa isolates (A,B,C and D) taken from four laboratories in Bandung, and the sensitivity test for several antibiotics (tetracyclin, ampicyllin, amoxicyllin-clavulanat, kanamycin, ciprofloxazin, trimetoprim-sulphametoxazol, chloramphenicol dan eritromycin), was performed using Kirby-Bauer method. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) for 4 isolates were 20.57-39.07 mg/ml for erithromycin, 29.35-48.57 mg/ml for kanamycin, 30.35-68.75 mg/ml for tetracyclin, 45.57-97.50 mg/ml for ampicyllin, 23.69-97.50 mg/ml for chloramphenicol, 25.82-59.56 mg/ml for amoxcyllin-clavulanat, 21.88-79.00 mg/ml for trimetoprim sulphametoxazol, and 20.58-56.97 mg/ml for ciprofloxazin. The increasing of MIC to each antibiotic was shown for 4 isolates of P. aeruginosa multiresistant to several antibiotics being studied. PCR technique was used to detect mexB gene fragment asumed as the substrate recognition site. The percentage of homology between the nucleotide sequence of mexB multiresistant P. aeruginosa and mexB P. aeruginosa producing siderophore pioverdin (Acc. No. L11616, NCBI) showed 96%, 100%, 97%, and 96% homology for P. aeruginosa A,B,C and D respectively. Employing DNAstar program, fragment variant of mexB gene of 4 multiresistant isolates A, B, C and D was detected. This variation lead to amino acid substitution of Gly-417?Ser, Glu-417?Gln, Thr-424?Pro, Tyr-328?Phe, Asp-328?His for P. aeruginosa A,B,C and D respectively, along with the change of their secondary structure, that changed the functional protein of MexB.

ABSTRACT
The use of serum in a culture medium is a common practice in the study of mouse embryo development in vitro. However, the role of unknown factors in serum influencing the embryo development has been difficult to determine. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of amino acid in serum free medium on in vitro development of mouse embryo. This study was conducted in the following ways: (1) medium M16 supplemented with 0.3% BSA, (2) medium M16 supplemented with 2% v/v MEM, and (3) medium M16 supplemented with 2% v/v MEM and 0.1 mmol of glutamine. The embryos were collected in 3 stage of development: zygote (day-1), morula (day-3) and compacted morola (day-4). The results indicated that supplementation of amino acid into M16 culture medium could replace the role of BSA aims at supporting the developmental potency of mouse embryos in vitro.
