ABSTRACT
Substances contained in cigarette had been known to decrease sperm number through the mechanism of DNA oxidative damage, vascularisation disruption, and spermatogenesis hormonal disruption. On the other hand, soybean, a protein-rich food which contains a lot of arginine can increase sperm number. It is expected that arginine in soybean can overcome the negative effects of cigarette smoke on sperm. This study aims to know the influence of soybeans to sperm number of white rats smoked with white cigarette. This was an experimental research. The subjects consist of 35 white rats (Rattus norvegicus), divided into 5 groups: negative control (K-) which was not given any treatment, positive control (K+) which was smoked with white cigarette, and A, B and C which were given treatments with soybean diet of 4 g, 5 g and 10 g, respectively and smoked with white cigarette. Treatment were given for 90 days and K+, A, B, and C were ETS smoked with 5 cigarettes/10 minutes/days each. After 90 days the rats were decapitated and sperm numbers of each groups were calculated and analyzed with Oneway ANOVA by using SSPS 11. Sperm number of K- is not significantly different from K+ (p=0,981; p>0,05). Comparing soybean effects among K+, A, B and C, it shows that sperm number of K+ is not significantly different from A (p=0,790; p>0,05). Conversely, K+ shows significant difference from B and C (p=0,000 for B and p=0,0015 for C; p<0,05). Based on the data above, it can be inferred that soybean of B and C dose can increase sperm number. Smoking with ETS method using 5 cigarrettes /10 minutes /day for 90 days does not significantly reduce sperm number. Taking soybean of 5-7,2 g /day increases sperm number of white rat smoked with white cigarette. Increased soybean dosage were followed with increased soybean effect.
