Genomic Research, Yarsi Has Invested Billions

Indonesia is still far behind in terms of genome research. The proof is that Indonesia does not yet have an Indonesian genome. If this is done, then this research will be a big project, because we can map the Indonesian genome, so we can predict disease, diagnose disease, and diagnose disease. Apart from that, it is very important, the genome also functions to determine which medicines are suitable for certain people (administering appropriate medicines).

Chairman of the Yarsi Foundation Trustees, Prof. Dr. Journalist Uddin, PAK (Prof Jurnali) asked Usman from Kabar Magazine about Genomic (Genomic Chant), yesterday

Prof. Journalist added that up to now, if someone is sick, they are given standard medicine, the same for everyone. There is a difference between men and women, their weight, their age. Aka like buying a shirt, based on size, large (L), medium (M) and small (S).

According to Prof. Journalist, now similar treatment is no longer enough. Now we are starting to look at the genome. For example, for high blood pressure patients, suitable medication is given based on genome mapping.

Furthermore, this genome is closely related to precision medicine, known as Precision Medicine or Genomic Medicine. This medicine has become the spotlight of the global medical world. It is no longer just a concept, but a new paradigm that promises a more precise approach in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Precision Medicine is what determines whether a drug is suitable for someone or not.” "Towards precision medicine, Genomic research is needed," said the alumnus of the Faculty of Medicine, Gadjah Mada University

Genome research is a big job. So it is not enough to just do Yarsi University or certain universities. This is where cooperation (research) and funding are needed. If Yarsi had done it himself, the results would have been slow.

Likewise, if you just rely on the government, it won't be possible. Because the government budget for research is small. If you want to be successful, the budget will be increased and the results will be fast, cooperation from the industrial world is needed.

The problem is, the industrial world prefers to go its own way. Universities rarely succeed in inviting the industrial world to collaborate. Unlike America, cooperation with industry is good.

"If cooperation with the industrial world is realized, there will be many benefits for this country or humanity," said Chairman of Trustees Yarsi.

Returning to Genome research, Prof. Jurnalis said that making an Indonesian genome requires molecular genomic study tools such as sequencing, which are expensive (billions). If there is damage to this equipment, repairs are expensive (1,5 billion).

Yarsi University already has two sequencing tools. Apart from that, thermal cycler for PCR, realtime PCR, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) short read Miseq illumina, NGS long read Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT), Spectrophotometer, FLuorometer, Micropipette, Electrophoresis apparatus, Luminex, pipette etc.

Yarsi University's attention to Genome research is based on following developments in world medicine and is related to the internationalization of higher education. With internationalization, Yarsi is obliged to collaborate with overseas (foreign) universities and this is being carried out.

On the other hand, the genome can help predict whether someone will contract a disease or not so that treatment can be adjusted. suffering can be avoided. So Genomics is one of the efforts to prevent disease. Therefore, Genomic research is important, Yarsi University is determined to become a champion in Genomics. This determination has been translated into billions of investments, including in human resources

Genomics is a research activity, because Yarsi has invested billions in Genomics, hoping that there will be tax reductions and relief from the government for Yarsi University. This tax relief will be used by Yarsi University for research. And Yarsi is ready to be monitored and supervised.

Yarsi lecturers and researchers prepare themselves to always follow developments and advances, including in the field of genomics. Yarsi has prepared the funds and container. (Usman)
