Mental Health First Aid: Your First Step to Supporting Well-Being

Mental Health First Aid is a course that serves as the initial segment of the International Health Psychology Short Course Program, organized by the Faculty of Psychology at YARSI University from late February to early March 2024. This course, which lasts 2.5 hours per session over 4 days, features Ratih Arruum Listiyandini, Ph.D., a lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology, YARSI University, who is currently pursuing further studies at the University of New South Wales. Dr. Listiyandini presents on resilience and the development of internet-based interventions for mental health.

Participants in this course learn fundamental concepts of mental health, including prevalence, risk factors, symptoms of mental health disorders, and practical tips for acting as a mental health first aider. Dr. Listiyandini also emphasizes the importance of recognizing signs of mental health issues, such as symptoms persisting for several weeks, unusual physiological reactions like disturbances in eating, sleeping, concentration, intense pain, and disruptions to daily activities.

The course teaches essential skills for assisting individuals experiencing psychological symptoms using the ALGEE framework, which stands for; Approach, assess, and assist the person; Listen and communicate without judgement; Give support and information; Encourage the person to get professional help; Encourage other supports

This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, which focuses on Good Health and Well-being. By gaining a better understanding of mental health, participants are expected to be more prepared to support individuals experiencing mental health issues and contribute to the overall improvement of public health.
