YARSI University Provides Direct Assistance by Land to Flood Disaster Victims in Sumatra

Universitas YARSI responded swiftly to disaster relief needs by channeling direct material donations to disaster victims in Sumatra in early December 2025. The donations were delivered directly to the port to be transported by the TNI Angkatan Laut fleet, ensuring efficient and secure distribution to affected communities. This humanitarian initiative was driven by the urgent need to provide immediate relief to disaster victims who faced critical shortages of essential supplies including food, clean water, clothing, hygiene items, and shelter materials. Natural disasters often leave communities vulnerable and displaced, requiring rapid response from various stakeholders to prevent further humanitarian crises. By coordinating with the Indonesian Navy, Universitas YARSI ensured that aid would reach remote or difficult-to-access disaster areas through military logistics infrastructure capable of navigating challenging terrain and weather conditions. This direct response demonstrates the university’s commitment to social responsibility and community service, recognizing that academic institutions have both the moral obligation and the capacity to contribute meaningfully during national emergencies, mobilizing resources and networks to support fellow citizens in their most vulnerable moments.

This disaster relief initiative directly supports Sustainable Development Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities. By providing immediate humanitarian assistance, Universitas YARSI helps mitigate the impact of disasters on affected populations, supporting their recovery and resilience. The initiative also aligns with SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals, as demonstrated through effective collaboration between the academic institution and military forces, showcasing how multi-sector partnerships can enhance disaster response efficiency and reach. Furthermore, this activity supports SDG 1 on No Poverty and SDG 2 on Zero Hunger by addressing the immediate needs of disaster victims who often face food insecurity and economic hardship in the aftermath of catastrophic events. Through this humanitarian response, Universitas YARSI embodies the principle that universities serve not only as centers of learning and research but also as agents of social change and community support, contributing to building more resilient communities capable of recovering from disasters and reducing vulnerability to future hazards, ultimately advancing Indonesia’s commitment to protecting all citizens and ensuring no one is left behind in times of crisis.
