Guest Lecture: Fragile X Tremor Ataxia (FXTAS) and Premature Ovarian Failure with Prof. Flora Tassone from UC Davis

On October 25, 2025, the Master’s Program in Biomedical Sciences at YARSI University, in collaboration with Prodia, organized a guest lecture featuring Prof. Flora Tassone, Ph.D., from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine at the University of California Davis, Sacramento, USA. This academic event was initiated to address the critical need for advanced knowledge on genetic disorders, specifically Fragile X Tremor Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS) and Premature Ovarian Failure, conditions that significantly impact quality of life but remain underdiagnosed and poorly understood in many healthcare settings. The lecture was conducted online via Zoom meeting, making it accessible to students, researchers, and healthcare professionals interested in genetic counseling and molecular medicine. Organized by the Genetic Counseling Master Students batch 2024, the event provided participants with cutting-edge insights into the molecular mechanisms, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and management strategies for these genetic conditions, directly from an internationally recognized expert in the field of FMR1-related disorders.

This guest lecture aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 on Good Health and Well-being, which emphasizes ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all. By bringing world-class expertise to Indonesian students and healthcare professionals, the program strengthens capacity building in genetic medicine and rare disease management, contributing to improved healthcare quality and diagnostic capabilities. The knowledge shared about FXTAS and Premature Ovarian Failure enables better understanding of genetic conditions affecting women’s reproductive health and neurological function, supporting more accurate diagnoses and appropriate patient care. Furthermore, this initiative supports SDG Goal 4 on Quality Education by providing access to international expertise and fostering academic excellence through collaboration with leading global institutions. By facilitating knowledge transfer in specialized medical fields, Universitas YARSI contributes to building a more competent healthcare workforce equipped to address complex health challenges, ultimately advancing Indonesia’s capacity to provide comprehensive healthcare services and achieve universal health coverage for all citizens.
